![]() ![]() That virtualized environment is going to emulate virtual hardware that isn't the same as the hardware on the MacBook. So you're not really "running" it on your MacBook, as in running it directly on the hardware, but instead in a virtualized environment. Samsung? has an entire site dedicated for provided all the components on their machines(at least here in Korea). If they can get away with subpar repairable products, then all the other manufacturers will follow as well.Īdditionally, what manufacturer gimps their products to have 0 repairability? Lenovo? they provide first-party components for their machines, plus have user-replaceable components. Apple has the power to shape the entire industry. Lenovo or HP on the other hand, not so much. Ask some random person o the street and they probably know what apple is. Why do we shit on Apple? Well, they are the biggest target to hit honestly. They're not perfect but there are plenty of other completely trash laptop manufacturers that no one shits on as hard as Apple. Which also means that you cannot replace them with newer models. You can replace SSDs and memory on older models. Some (ie T2 chip) I believe don't work at all if you replace them with a donor board due to software locks. Other components, on the other hand, could be purchased directly from the manufacturer directly without having to purchase donor boards increasing e-waste and time. Last time I checked common computer failure points(storage, RAM, etc) were easily user-replaceable. ![]() Since when was buying donor boards and replacing components by soldering them good repairability. You buy donor boards off ebay and swap good components to them. Having to use community made or third-party made schematics just because the original manufacturer does not provide them is not good repairability. You are literally contradicting yourself. Just because Apple doesn't provide them doesn't mean you can't get them? All that said, I hate Apple and run Linux. And the one time someone came up to me with a tech problem, it was a Windows PC. The other reason I'm writing this, is that when I lived with a couple hundred Japanese people in a big shared building almost everyone had Macbooks. Now, I don't know about the more recent versions, and I'm not using them for gaming. Frankly I am willing to pay double for better reliability and aging. I would have frankly kept this to myself except that the YouTuber TechLead and even Linus from Linus Tech Tips agreed with this (although he felt the machines are overpriced). My 2013 Macbook Air feels quite fine to me still today. My experience with non-Apple laptops has been quite mixed in terms of hardware reliability and also I've always felt the laptops aged quite badly, feeling old after just 2 or 3 years. While your points are 100% valid, my personal experience has been that Apple hardware has been far more consistent in giving me several laptops that mainly worked and was still a pleasure to use quite some years later. If I were buying a new machine strictly for myself, I would likely go with a ThinkPad. (My needs are lesser so I am fine with older hardware). ![]() I want my family's computer upgrade cycle to be such that I get my wife a new MacBook every 3-5 years and I take her old one and put Linux on it. I hope that the Linux kernel continues to integrate support for Apple hardware. I really, really hate Windows, so having the ability to run MacOS as a fallback is great. Battery life is mediocre at about 5 hours with normal use and I have to hunt down a wifi driver for many OSs.Īnother benefit: I often need a mainstream OS for remotely-proctored exams (GoTo Meeting). Not ideal, but it does what I need without the need to buy a new machine. I prefer Linux by a wide margin, so I have Linux on my MacBook Air 2014 (actually, I have MacOS 10.14 and 10.15, then Ubuntu 20.04 and Manjaro). I haven't purchased a personal computer since my job transition (2.5 years ago).
